The 1st Workshop MicroMundo@UPorto took place on the 19th of July at UCIBIO in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP)/ICBAS complex and counted with the participation of 50 university students, professors and researchers, and school professors.
The workshop was organized by UCIBIO researchers from the BacT_Drugs Lab: Luísa Peixe (FFUP), Ana R. Freitas (FFUP), Carla Novais (FFUP), Ângela Novais (FFUP), Filipa Grosso (FFUP), Teresa G. Ribeiro (FFUP), Svetlana Perovic (FFUP), Andreia Rebelo (FFUP), Magdalena Księżarek (FFUP), Patrícia Antunes (FCNAUP)] and Joana Mourão currently working in the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (Coimbra University).
The workshop aimed to disseminate the results and impact of the first edition of MicroMundo@UPorto that involved professors and researchers from UCIBIO at the Faculty of Pharmacy-FFUP and Faculty of Nutrition and Food Science-FCNAUP, 41 students from FFUP and FCNAUP, and 6 Professors and 180 students from 3 schools in the metropolitan area of Porto (EBS Carolina Michaëlis, EB Irene de Lisboa and EBS Rodrigues de Freitas). Eighty soil samples were analyzed and more than 800 microorganisms were tested for their potential of antibacterial activity.
The workshop counted with participants from other University institutions in Portugal (FCUP, FMDUP, Escola Universitária Vasco da Gama-Coimbra, Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde–CESPU, Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Universidade do Algarve, Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco e Centro Ciência Viva-Bragança) and Spain (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Universidad de La Rioja) that will expand the MicroMundo network and encourage students to pursue careers in Biological Sciences by engaging them in the global and urgent problem of antimicrobial resistance.
