Researchers from the Toxicology Research Lab of UCIBIO-FFUP, played a prominent role at the 59th Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX 2025), held in Athens from 14 to 17 September.
The research team contributed actively to the scientific programme with several poster presentations by PhD and Master students, including Catarina Pereira Teixeira Cláudia Vitorino-Oliveira, Jéssica Veiga-Matos, Sandra Filipa Carvalho Barreiro, and Vânia Raquel da Cunha Monteiro, highlighting the diversity and scientific quality of the toxicology research developed at UCIBIO-FFUP.
Portuguese representation was marked by significant participation in key roles within the EUROTOX community. Félix Carvalho, head of the Toxicology Lab and Professor at FFUP, attended for the last time as Past-President of EUROTOX’s Executive Committee; Fernando Remião, Senior Researcher at the same Lab and Professor at FFUP, represented the Portuguese Society of Pharmacology at the Business Council Meeting; and João Pedro Silva, Senior Researcher at the Toxicology Lab, continued his duties as Secretary of the Molecular Toxicology Specialty Section.
A special moment of distinction during the congress was the awarding of the title of Honorary Member of EUROTOX to Félix Carvalho. A distinction reserved for individuals who have rendered outstanding service in advancing the mission of EUROTOX’s mission to foster toxicology across Europe, both scientifically and educationally.
In its official tribute, the EUROTOX organisation praised Felix Carvalho’s “remarkable and highly deserving leadership journey, which has significantly shaped EUROTOX”, highlighting his contributions as Secretary-General (2012–2018), President of the EUROTOX 2015 Congress in Porto, and as EUROTOX’s President (2021–2023). This distinction also reflects his “ongoing commitment to EUROTOX’s mission and vision, and his pivotal role in strategic decision-making, in advocating for toxicology research field, and fostering collaboration between academia, regulatory bodies, and industry”.
