The first edition of the “UCIBIO Summer School - Initiation to Research in Applied Biomolecular Sciences" had as its main objectives:
- To introduce Undergraduate and Masters students, and young Masters to current scientific research practices through development of an experimental project in the area of Biomolecular Sciences applied to Health and Environment
- Develop skills in science communication, critical analysis of results, critical thinking and teamwork.
Program
Week 1
- Introduction to biomolecular techniques (20 hours): Presentation of techniques and methodologies most used by UCIBIO research groups followed by practical demonstration in the laboratory.
- Seminars (10 hours): Seminars on the contextualization of scientific activities to be developed within the scope of the research objectives of the teams and UCIBIO. The program of the first week was organized by Eurico J. Cabrita and Filipa Marcelo, with the participation of several UCIBIO researchers.
Weeks 2 to 10
- Development of individual scientific project (340 hours) according to the list of proposed projects
- Science Club (20 hours): Once a week (2 hours). Presentation and moderation of the discussion of a scientific article to the entire group of students/advisors/community UCIBIO. The Journal Club was organized by students: João Cruz, João Martinho and Ricardo Oliveira
Weeks 11 and 12
- Final Activity Report and Scientific Symposium (60 hours), organized in conjunction with students from other summer schools at the NOVA School of Science and Technology.
