The first GLYCOTwinning Summer School took place at NOVA FCT, Caparica, from 25-28 September and was organized by the UCIBIO NOVA FCT research labs, namely by the BioNMR and by the XTAL lab, in close collaboration with the Chemical Glycobiology Lab, Computational Chemistry Lab and Structure & Cell Biology of Viruses Lab of the CICbioGUNE partner.

This 1st Summer School consisted of a scientific hands-on course on the state of the art and on advanced methodologies to decode, with atomic resolution, protein-glycan interactions. The course comprised experimental and theoretical structural biology methodologies, which are essential to characterize the molecular determinants that govern protein-glycan interactions. In this context, the course covered essential methodologies such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, cryoEM and molecular modelling protocols. Due to the hands-on nature of the workshop, this course was given to a restricted group of 13 participants, which included 5 Master students, 7 PhD students and one chemical technician. From this group of participants, 11 belonged to the coordinator Institution (NOVA FCT) and 2 to institutions from abroad, namely from Ireland (Maynooth University) and Czech Republic (Czech Academy of Sciences). However, the UCIBIO NOVA FCT community could participate in informative theoretical lectures and talks delivered by expert speakers. The average attendance to these talks was 25 participants.

Also, a poster session and a scientific round table discussion were organized to promote the contact of young researcher students with experts in structural biology techniques and in the glycoscience field. This was a key opportunity for master and doctoral candidates to present their work and a primordial moment for exchanging ideas. Ultimately, this 1st Summer School also reinforced the collaborations between UCIBIO NOVA FCT and CICbioGUNE research groups.

The first GLYCOTwinning Workshop on Transferable Skills (WTS) focused on Building Resilience and Career Planning, and took place at NOVA FCT from 28th to 29th September, as a satellite event of the GLYCOTwinning Summer School. This WTS was co-organised locally with the WORKS4U team from UCIBIO NOVA FCT and with the Imperial College partner. The workshop targeted a working group of 20 participants from UCIBIO NOVA FCT, including Master students, PhD students, Post-docs, Senior researchers and Professors.
