Angela Carapito, a PhD student at the Toxicology Research Lab of UCIBIO-Porto, was awarded first prize at the 2025 edition of the U.Porto 3MT® (Three Minute Thesis) competition, which challenges doctoral students to present their research clearly and concisely in just three minutes.

Her PhD project, developed within the Doctoral Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP), is supervised by Paula Guedes de Pinho and co-supervised by Joana Pinto, Félix Carvalho, and Cecília Roque. The research focuses on developing a new, non-invasive approach for the early detection of bladder cancer by analysing the "odor fingerprint" of urine. By identifying specific volatile biomarkers, the method aims to provide a quicker, more accessible, and less invasive diagnostic alternative.

The final round of the competition took place on 16 May in the Rectory Hall of the University of Porto. Twenty finalists participated, each allowed one slide and a strict three-minute limit to present their research to a general audience. Angela Carapito underlined the importance of making scientific research accessible: “Science is powerful, but only if we can communicate it in a way that resonates with people.”

The jury, composed of professionals from science, business, and communication, awarded her the top prize of 2,000 euros.

This distinction highlights not only the scientific value of her work but also her ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner.
