PhD student Cristina Almeida wins best Poster Award at ESMO TAT 2025

Cristina Almeida, PhD student at the UCIBIO Drug Targets and Biomarkers Research Lab, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, has been awarded the Best Poster Award at the European Society for Medical Oncology Targeted Anticancer Therapies (ESMO TAT) Congress 2025. The event took place in Paris from March 3 to 5, 2025, bringing together researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and regulatory bodies in the field of cancer drug development.

Cristina Almeida’s work, titled “Cannabinoids as therapeutic agents for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer: involvement of aromatase and hormone receptors” is part of her PhD research, which aims to clarify the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Using in silico and in vitro models, the team is investigating the mechanisms of action of this class of compounds in sensitive and resistant stages of the disease, when used alone or in combination with therapies already used in clinic.

Cristina Almeida's PhD project is supervised by Cristina Amaral, Natércia Teixeira, and Georgina Correia da Silva. Her recognition at ESMO TAT 2025 highlights UCIBIO’s contribution to advancing innovative cancer research.
