UCIBIO Celebrates International Microorganism Day 2025

On 17 September, UCIBIO joined the global celebration of International Microorganism Day, honouring the vital role microorganisms play in science, health, and the environment. Visitors explored the world of microbes through microscope observations, tested their knowledge with fun and educational quizzes, and had the opportunity to interact with researchers throughout the event.

At FFUP, the BacTDrugs group hosted an interactive event featuring the MicroMundo@UPorto Project, a citizen science initiative that engages students and the public in the discovery of antibiotic-producing microorganisms.

At NOVA FCT, researchers from various groups organized an exhibition and hands-on activities showcasing the impact of microorganisms in fields such as microbial fuel cells, bacterial infections, antibiotic resistance, and the Portuguese Yeast Culture Collection (PYCC).

This annual celebration, first launched in Portugal in 2017 by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM), has grown into a global event, and continues to raise awareness of the invisible yet powerful organisms that shape our world.
