Ângela Carapito, a PhD student at UICBIO - FFUP, conducting research at the Toxicology Research Lab of UCIBIO-Porto, has been awarded first prize at the 2025 international EUGLOH 3-Minute PhD Pitch competition.
Organised by the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH), of which the University of Porto is a founding member, the competition brought together 18 doctoral candidates from alliance’s nine partner/ member universities. Following a format similar to the U.Porto 3MT® competition, which Ângela had already won earlier this year, participants were challenged to present their doctoral research clearly and engagingly in just three minutes, using only one slide and addressing a non-specialist audience.
The final of this second edition of the EUGLOH 3-Minute PhD Pitch was held in September at the University of Alcalá, Spain, where Ângela once again demonstrated her exceptional science communication skills. She impressed the jury with her pitch on a novel, non-invasive approach for the early detection of bladder cancer, based on the “odour fingerprint” of urine. This project, which she has been developing under the supervision of Paula Guedes de Pinho and co-supervision of Joana Pinto, Félix Carvalho, and Cecília Roque, aims to identify specific volatile biomarkers to enable a faster, more accessible, and less invasive bladder cancer diagnostic method. This recognition highlights not only the scientific merit of Ângela’s work, but also her outstanding ability to communicate complex research with clarity and impact on an international stage.
